Welcome back. This month marks the end of Summer, the harvest and the turn of our eating and drinking habits. The Sherington feast was a celebration of this in days of old, as we stopped eating the fruits of Summer and turned to more hardy foodstuffs that would last the winter.Much like nowadays I suppose, as I turn from a crisp Chablis to the warmer Shiraz, which goes much better with stews, casseroles or a takeaway curry. There%u2019s nothing like a late Summer%u2019s evening with a glass of something nice at one of our local pubs. Village pubs, in our more secular society, are the hub of local life, where everyone is welcomed, young and old, and news and gossip fow.But they are a dying art. The hospitality industry has been battered over recent years, and many great hostelries have closed. It%u2019s tough now for everyone, but we must use them or lose them. A couple of pints or a nice pub meal wouldn%u2019t go amiss every month. The White Hart, The Chequers, The Swan, The Chester Arms and many other wonderful pubs are providing a real service to our villages. Many people would love to be within walking distance of one. So please, let%u2019s all help them out by making the most of these remarkable meeting places. Have a great month, and I%u2019ll see you at the bar.Mike Dear ReadersDEADLINE FOR OCTOBER:18TH SEPTEMBER
