Some of you may have noticed a new sticker on the sign at the end of Gun Lane. This is one of the many way signs that have been posted along a newly defined MKCC public walking route %u2013 Mike Mellor Way.First mentioned in the very detailed Rights of Way Improvement Plan for 2023 -2033 which includes a dedication to the late Michael James Mellor (1944-2001) Rights of Way Officer an extract of which is shown below %u201cThe right of the public to access the countryside is well understood, as is the expectation that the network of paths which enable access is appropriately managed by the local authority. Perhaps less well understood is the access we enjoy today is the culmination of many years work and although many have contributed to the service, the pioneering work of the late Mike Mellor is commended for its originality, enduring success and starting when the service was in its infancy%u201d We have received a copy of the Mike Mellor Way route map. Its approx. 10 miles connecting existing Rights of Way (RoW) and bridle paths. This would be a good walk on a fine day. Good boots would be useful. We noted that there are a number of convenient resting places (with loos) along the way, so we added the signage as a prompt to encourage SCAN readers to consider following the route as a New Year challenge. (Perhaps as a route for a sponsored fundraising walk )Starting at the White Hart you can choose a route along School Lane and Perry Lane and on towards Clifton Reynes or a route along Gun Lane, head towards Filgrave and on to Emberton. There are a number of Rights of Way and Bridle Paths shown on the map that can be taken if you prefer a shorter route back to Sherington.NB:- If you have issues with Rights of Way please raise with your Parish Council or MKCC RoW officePAGE 34
