PAGE 20 As October comes to an end, mention should be made of the seasonal events, in particular the generosity of those who adorned the church for the Harvest Festival with food stuffs which were then taken to a local Food Bank and the support given to two other very successful social events, the quiz night and the recent Harvest supper. These both saw the Village Hall filled to capacity as people of all ages enjoyed delicious food and good company.November is the last of the three months autumn period. The ground will become increasingly covered by leaves as the trees, shrubs and hedgerows shed them ready for the winter period. The old-fashioned rakes and the modern leaf blowers will soon be busy; the green bins will be filled and there will be the smell of smoke from some burning of heaped piles of decaying leaves. They could of course be composted and eventually Incorporated back into the ground if there is sufficient enthusiasm and energy to do that. We are now in the habit of leaving our garden flowers and plants with berries over the winter months so that some of the smaller birds that are around us can feed on the seeds during the winter, perhaps you do the same. I have always thought that November is the foggiest month but on checking Google it seems that I am wrong as it is usually December. What I can remember about November in the distant past is the strong smell of sulphur that came with the fog, the result of having a brick making industry with very tall chimneys at Stewartby which added their combustion products to the fog. A more pleasant smell is that of fish and chips particularly after spending a day working in the garden but for now, I will move on to details of the planned events in Chicheley this month.Forthcoming EventsThe next Chich Chats will be held from 10.30 a.m. until noon on Tuesday November 11th. and Tuesday, December 9th.in the village hall.November 5th.
