DEAR FRIENDS DEAR FRIENDSDEADLINE FOR NOVEMBER: 18TH OCTOBER Dame Cicely Saunders trained as a nurse, a medical social worker and finally as a physician. She was involved with the care of patients with terminal illness from 1948 until her death in 2005 She founded St Christopher%u2019s Hospice in 1967 as the first hospice linking expert pain and symptom control, compassionate care, teaching and clinical research.St Christopher%u2019s has been a pioneer in the field of palliative medicine, which is now established worldwide. Her work led to the foundation of many hospices, including our own much-loved Willen Hospice. She doesn%u2019t look like a powerful person, but she demonstrated the effect of one of St. David%u2019s sayings: %u201cDo the little things%u201d. Cicely started small but achieved great things to help reduce the pain of suffering. We are all aware of the many people suffering as the results of wars and conflicts. Perhaps our %u201clittle thing%u201d might be to pray and follow the words of a hymn based on words of St. Francis:Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred let me bring your love. Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord And where there's doubt, true faith in you.Let%u2019s do the %u201cLittle things%u201d to help bring peace. Let%u2019s build on the work of the saints past and present in SCAN parish and celebrate All Saints Day.Prof John Fielding, LLM, SCAN Parish.
